AGI can understand, learn, adapt and implement knowledge in different contexts, making it capable of carrying out any intellectual task that a human being can do. Unlike narrow AI which is designed to perform specific tasks, AGI can switch from one discipline or task to another seamlessly, just like a human.
The concept of AGI is largely theoretical right now, as we have yet to fully achieve or create a system with this level of sophistication. Nevertheless, researchers and scientists worldwide are continuously exploring the prospect of AGI, which would likely result in a seismic shift in many sectors and aspects of life.
The ethical implications of creating a machine with AGI are also a subject of major debate. Concerns range from job displacement due to automation to the potential of AGI surpassing human intelligence and becoming uncontrollable – a scenario often referred to as the ‘singularity’. Thus, ongoing discussions in AGI research also revolve around ensuring safe and beneficial practices.
