To be honest, the Dell Inspiron 16 7620 Intel i7 initially seemed like a fantastic deal. From great performance to impressive quality, it appeared to be worth its price tag. I was convinced that it was a stellar piece of tech and was excited about using it.
A Month In – The Heat Issue
However, barely a month in and I started noticing an alarming problem. Even when simply browsing the internet, this laptop grew incredibly hot. The heat wasn’t just uncomfortable; it was enough to melt the adhesive on the rubber slip guards on its bottom surface!
The Trackpad Debacle
Four months down the line, another troubling issue emerged – an unresponsive trackpad. To my disbelief, the trackpad started having a mind of its own, jumping around randomly and making phantom clicks and drags. This made using my laptop incredibly frustrating – almost unusable.
Customer Support Rollercoaster Ride
Encountering these problems so early into ownership sent me hurtling toward Dell’s customer support for some respite. Surprisingly enough, their team turned out to be quite helpful. However, that didn’t last long!
My motherboard had failed thrice within four months of purchase! After each failure, I hoped against hope that they wouldn’t replace it with another refurbished one.
The customer support has now taken to troubleshooting at home (read: my kitchen table). But there have been two instances already where they’ve stood me up with no call or information in advance.
Moreover, upon contacting them again recently for repairs, Dell stated that they weren’t responsible since I bought the laptop from a third-party seller on Amazon!
Insurance Claim Limbo
Given this unexpected turn of events, I had no choice but to file an Asurion claim. But as of July 19th (13 days after filing my claim), I am still waiting for Asurion’s box and shipping label which should have arrived within three days after starting my claim!
In conclusion, while my initial impressions were positive due to its perceived value for money and performance capability – four months in and I’m dealing with heating issues and defective components alongside increasingly frustrating customer support experience.
I am left wishing if saving $500 by opting for something else might have saved me all these troubles. You’ve been warned!
My Thoughts On Dell XPS 17 After 1 Month Of Use
Initial Impressions
Normally, I’m not one to splurge on expensive computers, but after hearing so much about the Dell XPS 17, I decided to break the bank and see what all the fuss was about. To say that my experience was a mixed bag would be putting it mildly.
Battery Life and Touch Screen
Let me start by saying that this laptop has a battery life that leaves much to be desired. I mean, it’s almost non-existent! You’d think that for this price point, they’d at least ensure you don’t need to stay tethered to an outlet. Additionally, the touch screen seems to have a mind of its own and often moves around randomly.
The camera quality is another letdown. It’s just not up to par with what I’d expect from such an expensive machine.
Technical Issues
I also ran into some pretty serious technical problems with this unit; ‘RAM Failed’ messages popped up more frequently than I can count! Even when fully charged, these disruptive notifications persisted. Eventually, we had no choice but to send it back within the first 30 days. Even after this hiccup though, my daughter remains optimistic and wants us to give it another try.
Seemingly adding insult to injury was discovering a defective motherboard in a brand new machine! Dealing with Dell’s warranty support cost me ample time but their excellent service softened the blow somewhat.
Purchasing Experience
My purchasing experience was less than stellar too; box damage upon arrival and immediate powering on without pressing any button sure didn’t leave a good first impression. But things got worse during Windows updates – screen flashing prevented anything from being done! Needless to say, I had no option but returning it.
I guess buying straight from manufacturers might be safer in future – something worth considering if you’re planning on getting an expensive laptop!
Miscellaneous Musings
This laptop simply lacks proper room for an external mouse unless you count the adapter – which eventually broke in my case. My initial excitement over its impressive volume faded quickly as well as it dimmed noticeably sooner than expected.
Despite being someone who has appreciated Dell computers for years, this particular model has been quite disappointing.

The Silver Linings
Not everything about this pricey gadget is disheartening though: Its monitor is commendable – definitely worth mentioning amongst many disappointments – while its build quality remains uncompromised; reliable classic Dell chops!
I did note occasional struggles managing heavier tasks but overall performance isn’t something I’d complain about too much considering my professional needs were mostly met adequately.
Perhaps most worthy of praise is its USB-C ports; modern indeed!
Admittedly though – since everything else still uses traditional peripherals like ethernet cables – living without traditional usb ports took some getting used-to.
The keyboard could use some improvement as well – flat keys lacking ‘feel’ made typing less enjoyable than preferable while trackpad inconsistencies forced me into exclusive mouse usage sooner than later.

For those discerning computer users willing (and financially capable) enough for upgrades – adding more RAM or SSD drives promises enhanced user experience at reasonable costs.
While video editing goes smoothly enough and simulation games are handled quite decently by XPS 17’s horsepower (graphics card+cpu), speaker sound remained satisfactory throughout most activities providing acceptable audio output quality-wise.

While far from perfect – heck even regular expectations were seldom met – depending upon individual needs/preferences/capacity for upgrades & fixes; this might just work out for some.
